  • While I don't agree with DeVos being in her position, this teacher thinks you can throw money at a parenting issue and fix it. False. Camden NJ gets 30k per student, where their graduation rate is around 50%. My children get about 4k per student, and have more resources. I'm sick and tired of most of my tax dollars going to another school system to support the Abbott school districts. Complete BS. This teacher is too liberal.

  • This teacher is from Detroit? Detroit is a pit. Detroit's schools are sub-standard and more money isn't going to help (every teacher cries for ''more money'). Detroit already spends record amounts of money per student per year. Educational opportunity is what lousy school systems like Detroit (the lousiest) needs. This girl should be ashamed of herself. It's no wonder she hates and despises Secretary Betsy DeVos. Betsy DeVos is her natural enemy. Betsy DeVos is the natural enemy of teacher's unions and bloated school administrative bureaucracies everywhere. ''Visiting'' an underperforming school is not an answer or the real issue. The idea that Secretary DeVos is afraid that ''maybe someday underprivileged inner-city students from bad schools will ''outperform'' students from better schools is just patently insane.

  • Anyone notice how DeVos doesn't blink. How her eyes never waver at all? You know what that is? That's someone who has very specifically and intentionally trained themselves to control their eye movements when lying. Normally, whenever someone is fabricating a statement, or recalling a memory, the eyes break contact. If it's a memory, the eyes tend to look up and to the right/left (depending on which is dominant), while down and to the right/left when fabricating. Extended or unnecessarily frequent blinking is often another indicator, which is why its odd that she hardly blinks at all. Also, she tends to have no eyebrow expression, in which a furrowed brow can be an indicator, but not a consistent one. The point here is, she's not simply weird. It's pretty clear that she's actively resisting various impulses, and that may be part of the reason why she stumbles over her statements in general, so often. She's devoting so much attention to controlling her facial expression, that she doesn't have much left to consider what it is she's actually saying.

  • Charter schools should not take my tax money for their operations I pay for my local school district to educate our local students. Let these charter schools find a benefactor to supply the money needed if they are as good as they think they are it should be no problem having the funds donated for their continuance. As my tax money is diverted to these charter schools that takes away money from public schools that is needed to help their pubic students needs for a better education. Many charter schools are run by for-profit educational management organizations and ones that are non profit pay executives outrageous salaries to maintain their " non profit " designation. I sent my children to a " charter school " run by the Catholic church and paid in addition to my school district taxes and addition $3000 a year for each child. These charter schools are a rip off for the average home owner that pays taxes.

She does not know what is going on in public schools because she never visits them and therefore run on the idea that only rich parents have bright kids although it is completely the opposite in real life.

Just like the rest of the Cabinet and Trump who are using their offices to line their own pockets. I didn't know she was a billionaire. One thing I've learned about people with money, they always want more! Always. She should be ashamed for taking a job and taking Americans money for a job she's trying to set up for the rich and the ultra rich. We need to kick these people out as soon as possible!! How did she get confirmed in the first place?? I remember when they were questioning her and her answers were SO moronic. They couldn't believe it. Who did they pay to get her in? :( Songs

  • Why isn't this woman the Secretary of the Dept. of Education instead of stupid Billionaire Betsy. Devos helped destroy education in Michigan. I think they want christian schools funded and public destroyed so they can teach their form or right-wing extremist fake christian beliefs so they can raise generations of republicans who will vote to allow them to once again burn people at the stake. This president said he would run the country lie a business... meaning all the higher ups get more money by cutting staff and salaries of the workers and cutting benefits. We have the world's largest economy and, thanks to Pres. Obama, a heathy economy with a steady rise and there was no need to make these extreme tax cuts to where they are now threatening to make poor people and average Americans pay for it by losing healthcare and public education (we will have to wait and see how Trumpy's crap affects the economy, but the last time cuts were made like this was Reagan and he sent us into a recession). Trump said "we love the poorly educated" because they vote by emotion and excitement, not by evaluation and fact checking. Republicans, wealthy folks, and big business benefit from a certain portion of the population being dumb as rocks.

  • The truth is that no matter how much money is given to public schools it cannot fix the culture. Public schools are extremely corrupt. Teachers are routinely fired for minor disagreements with administrators. Howland-Bolton has tremendous enthusiasm, but what she considers progress is unknown. Her students aren't performing anywhere near grade level. If the parents have the wherewithal to seek out better schools, then that says a lot and gives hope to these students. Parents who could care less and had children in order to receive government subsidies have created a way of life that few can escape.

  • DeVos is the perfect torpedo to gut public school funding. Of course if you can afford to donate $200,000,000, you don't really need public education anyway.

    Reply
  • All you really need is Khan Academy. Free, universal, reliable and independent study. Teacher-student classroom dynamic doesn't work. Time to move with failed teaching in public education. I don't understand why everyone keeps arguing for free college, when you can practically learn everything on the internet. If you're motivated, you can find free high quality lectures from all sorts of universities and get a free education. Problem is, most people lack the will and discipline for independent study.

  • In Florida, some charter schools avoid accepting the lower students. There is no opportunity to reject students in the public school system. Betsy De Vos is just saying that because Florida had Jeb Bush, and now Rick Scott who supported charter schools and making money in public education.

  • USA is heading for a "Cast" society, just like India but at least, India is trying to get out of it, Americans are building a society where only those who are lucky enough to be born in wealthy families, will have privileges like access to education, medical care, police assistance etc... The rest of you will have to take jobs with no minimum wage, no insurance, no contract, because, for those who are not paying attention to what he's actually doing instead of just listening to his lies, trump is getting rid of all those "pesky" regulations, those horrible regulations that were created to protect consumers and workers, in other words, to protect you and I from Charlatans like trump. That's why I keep on saying this over and over, ie, if you're supporting trump today, you can only be one of two things, you're either a multi billionaire or an idiot, there's no ambiguity, if you're a working class citizen who has children in school and wants to retire with a house, if you're still supporting this self serving charlatan, you should look at his actions and stop listening to him, let his actions speak and you'll see the disrespect and the contempt that he has for workers and consumers.

Since its inception test scores have not gone up a single point in almost 50 year and we spend twice as much as any other country in the world per student. Not to mention it's unconstitutional. Anything not mentioned in the constitution is a 10th amendment (states rights) issue.

  • What is the cornerstone untruth of charter/private school performance VS that of public schools is the fact that that charter/private schools have the inherent right to discriminate against any child who does not meet or maintain the scholastic or social criterion without recourse of having to provide special programs to ensure annual academic growth. These schools simply expelled the struggling student. Public schools fall under the FAPE Law which insures a free and public education for all. This includes Individuals With Disabilities in Education Act. Public schools must teach ALL student without thought discriminatory practices. BETSY I CHALLENGE YOU TO TAKE AN ALTERNATE EDUCATION CERTIFICATION COURSE. I will even teach it to you. Then we can address your tunnel vision approach to public school funding and need for resources.

  • The so-called failure of the public school system is in large measure due to deliberate sabotage by powerful stakeholders. The Heritage Foundation alone has more or less successfully been discrediting public education since the 70s. The HF has done much to weaken the nation's "political will." Modern structural progress for a changing world -- i.e., meaningful reform -- is being blocked by ill-informed, if not always fringe and corporate-friendly politicians. To speak of "school choice" is a sinister banalization. The adverse effects will only reinforce inequality between the haves and the have-nots. "School choice" will: (1) Significantly reduce the public ed funds the affluent consider an "imposed" tax (2) Derail teacher rights and protections and eliminate pensions (3) De-professionalize teacher credentials and lower teaching standards (4) Reduce/freeze salaries very significantly (5) Will not expertly accommodate disabled learners (6) Re-segregate schools and reinvigorate social strife and inequality (7) Have you seen the stats of "school choice" in BD's state of Michigan? Daunting (8) Divert taxpayer dollars to line private pockets of dangerously inexpert companies (9) Strengthen overall trend of corporate welfare vs. the needs and rights of the citizen Cognitive Dissonance + Greed + Fringe Religion = DeVos. Trump is Devos' piñata. Care to discover how she sells autism "cures" through her company Neurocore? Perhaps BD attends her meetings in 1 of her 12 jets or 4 helicopters and saves taxpayer dollars. And of course: BD recently awarded the student loan debt to a collection company with ties to herself. One fine bonanza, here. Never mind DeVos recently rescinded the 72 guidance documents which inform parents and schools on IDEA 2004's protective laws and provisions for disabled children (DeVos is pushing for "school choice" on disabled learners). Never mind DeVos reversed Obama-era policy on campus sexual assault Investigations. How many generations will it take to sanitize the damage and filth of this administration? "Accidental inequalities of birth, wealth, and learning are always tending to restrict the opportunities of some as compared with those of others. Only free and continued education can counteract those forces which are always at work to restore, in however changed a form, feudal oligarchy. Democracy has to be born anew every generation, and education is its midwife" -- John Dewey
